While the timber is being milled, and prior to fabricating the formwork, there are ongoing refinements being made to the design.
As the brief for this kayak requires it to sail (with effectiveness) to windward the retractable dagger board will be positioned forward of the cockpit where it provides greater righting moment to the over-turning moment generated by the large sail area. This dagger board will only be used when under sail. Where it becomes necessary to maintain tracking in strong wind or when catching waves / steering under sail the retractable skeg / rudder will be deployed.
Concepts for arranging the combination of Aust red cedar and huon pine strips along the deck are being generated to reinforce the arrow-like directionality of this kayak. It may be possible to also acknowledge the position of other elements along the foredeck - including the compass, dagger sleeve and mast-step.
